Whether you: - Have never been on a horse before, are a beginner, a novice, an intermediate or an advanced rider - Are between 6 to 96 years of age - Are a male or female We can get you in the saddle, with the right horse/pony that suits your ability.
Having 28 (currently) GREAT horses/ponies in our lesson program allows us to match the horse to the rider's riding ability.
Here's our approach: We usually do an assessment (1st lesson) of your riding ability on our BEST beginner horse. We get to determine what level you ride at (beginner, novice, intermediate or advanced?). Can you trot, canter, or jump?. How good a seat do you have? How's your lower leg? Can you steer? Can you change the stride of your horse? Do you or we have any concerns? We can then match the horse/pony to your riding level, (and determine if you will have enough control to ride in the larger arena.) You may also gain an insight as to how & why your horse responds when you change your seat/body position/posting , & rein position/tension. (Also, We don't kick our horses here!, that's why they love us)
Our Lesson Program
Small arena: (one hour)* for $30.
If you are a complete beginner, you will get a PRIVATE lesson on our beginner horse. The instructor will be right beside you, jogging as the horse trots. (your body/rein position will be constantly corrected.) Once you have control , you will ride by yourself in the Private lesson until you have steering control. You will then ride, having up to 3 riders in total in the small arena (1:3 instructor ratio). Eventually, you will move up onto the next beginner horse/pony (one horse/pony at a time). You will learn to ride, trot poles & x's, canter, play games, & do various riding exercises. *The lesson is(one hour): the activity described below depends on rider's ability (ie cantering) -15 min on left rein, 15 on right rein = 30 min. of flatwork -each rider 5 min. of pole/x/figure8/game or other exercise (X3 riders = 15 min. total exercise time) -each rider 5 min. of cantering (if the rider is ready to canter) (X3 riders = 15 min. total canter time). Therefore, each rider's actual "riding around" time may be 35-40 min.
Large arena (or Large outside ring): one hour for $30. group lesson We have already deemed that you have control of your horse, can trot, canter, & trot a cross-rail. The lesson may have up to 6 riders in the arena. (1:6 instructor ratio). It involves 30 min (on right and left rein), Cantering (on right & left rein), and doing some jumping courses (trotting or cantering fences, do cross-rails or vertical fences, and the height of the fence is based on the rider's ability and the rider's choice of horse/pony.)
Homestead Hills has a large number of Families riding together! It is not uncommon, to have a parent (mother or father), decide to take up riding themselves, once they've watched their child in our riding program. It's a great sport that the family can participate in together!
